Esparza's Exclusive

By RENEE ESPARZA

The Blue & Gold Chief Staff Writer

The Blue & Gold is Bartlett High School’s first school newspaper in recent memory, a brainchild of three Bartlett sophomores and young, spirited teacher.

Meet our staff:

Sydney Stapley is a sophomore at Bartlett and has been a member of choir for five years. She enjoys singing and cooking. She describes herself as a caring person and thought launching a school newspaper was important because it would help people become informed members of the Bartlett and East Anchorage community.

Here are three fun facts about Sydney:

  1. She loves coffee.

  2. She loves food, especially Mexican food.

  3. She has a wonderful affinity for fashion.

Tempest Willequer is also a sophomore this year and a member of the swim and dive team. She takes particular interest in German and band, where she plays the flute. She enjoys swimming, food, and not much else because she’s very busy with school, sports, and scouting. She was the first student to come up with the idea of The Blue & Gold because she realized she was uninformed about things going on around the school and wanted to change that.

Three fun facts about Tempest:

  1. She wishes to own a motorcycle in the future.

  2. She loves quesadillas.

  3. Her footwear of choice is Crocs.

Covie Stockton, the final sophomore on staff, is also Vice President of Bartlett Student Government. He’s currently in AP World History and is a very hardworking, dedicated person. He works at Arctic Roadrunner, loves cars (he owns a 1989 Ford Mustang!), and misses Texas a lot. He loves working for The Blue & Gold because he loves Bartlett and wants to get everyone more involved in the school and the community.

More about Covie:

  1. He hopes to be the best lawyer in the South someday.

  2. He calls himself a Disney Channel theme song expert.

  3. He can rock a pair of cowboy boots.

I’m Mrs. Renee Esparza, and I’m in my fourth year of teaching English at Bartlett. I have my undergraduate degree in Journalism and English and spent two years working as a sportswriter at the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. I love cooking, watching sports, and writing. I’m married to Mr. Esparza and have three awesome daughters: Olivia, Marley, and Clara.

Three random facts about me:

  1. I’m from Wisconsin and love the Packers and the Badgers.

  2. I’m afraid of kangaroos.

  3. I can touch my tongue to my nose.
